Official Ballot Question

Do you, the undergraduate students of UCSB, approve a measure to change the mandatory quarterly Associated Students (A.S.) fee to an optional, ‘opt-in’ fee, effective Fall Quarter 2026? A ‘Yes’ vote converts the fee to an optional payment. A

‘No’ vote keeps the fee mandatory for all students.

Official Proposal Summary (For Petitions & Voter Guides)

Title: The Student Choice Fee Initiative (A.S. “Opt-In”)

Proposal Summary: “A ‘Yes’ vote on this measure gives every undergraduate student the freedom to choose whether or not to pay the quarterly Associated Students (A.S.) fee.

Currently, every student is charged $xxx per quarter (over $xx per year) for A.S., regardless of whether they use its services or agree with its politics. This initiative converts that mandatory charge into a simple ‘opt-in’ checkbox on the registration page.

Why Vote ‘Yes’?

Student Choice: You decide if A.S.’s services and advocacy are worth your money.

Financial Freedom: Students who are struggling financially can keep over $xxx in their pockets.

Accountability: A.S. will be forced to be more responsible, transparent, and efficient with student money to earn your support.

Currently, hundreds of thousands of dollars go wasted each year or sit idle in inactive bank accounts due to mandatory fees, instead of letting students choose where their dollars go.

If you believe students should control their own money, vote ‘Yes’ for student choice.
