STATEMENT

Dear Gauchos,
My name is Suyan Wang, and I am running to be your next Student Advocate General.

I have worked in the Office of the Student Advocate for the past three years and have supported the previous three Student Advocate Generals in a variety of roles.
As a Conduct Caseworker, I advised students who were facing misconduct allegations from the University. As the External Chief of Staff, I initiated consistent meetings with 10+ university offices such as the Office of Student Conduct, Housing, Title IX, and UCPD to ensure student concerns raised from our cases were delivered directly to University officials. I also hosted a panel with Conduct Officers and professors to invite students to directly express AI-related concerns. As I moved to my current role as Head of Staff, I worked with the current SAG to improve the case intake system, leading to double the amount of cases. On top of these achievements, we have also expanded our case intake language options to more than five languages.

This year, I also served as the Chair of the Global Gaucho Commission, the international student advocacy BCU. Consequently, I am equipped with extensive experience in advocacy, professionalism, and project management. In my capacity as the GGC chair, I have worked closely with OISS, EAP, and Health & Wellness and have met frequently regarding visa policy updates and immigration concerns. I will put this experience into advocating for the UCSB community with full force.
Here’s what I will do as your Student Advocate General:

DEMAND transparency and expedited communication from the University,
INFORM all students of university policies and A.S. resources so no student tuition goes to waste, and
DEFEND student rights with a more accessible casework and outreach system, so EVERY STUDENT can be reached, heard, and represented when needed.

I assure you that I place public interest at the heart of all my service, and I speak with action. Let’s make the SAG office the students’ office.
