STATEMENT

Hey Gauchos! My name is Morsal Abdali, and I’m a first-year honors political science student running to be one of your 2026-2027 Associated Students on-campus senators.

I am immensely driven and passionate about advocating for UCSB students, specifically for those who will live on campus. As a current (and future) on-campus resident, this role is personal to me. I have first hand experience with the limited, affordable, and accessible housing, as well as the living conditions on campus. I aim to turn this experience into action.

As an on-campus senator, I am committed to advocating for students and creating a campus where students' needs are actually met. I will support legislation that fulfills the needs of on-campus students and ensure that the Senate maximizes its efficiency and fairness. With rising tuition increases, the ongoing housing crisis, and increasing budget cuts to student organizations, the interests of the student population are continuing to be overlooked. As a senator, I will prioritize fair budget allocation, protect student organizations, and create opportunities for students to engage in open discourse on their concerns. I will increase transparency surrounding budget cuts, work with housing offices on campus to advocate for accessible options, and push for more accessible on campus meal plans, which students currently pay for.

After years of experience serving in leadership roles on my high school mock trial team and my current involvement on the UCSB Mock Trial, I have developed a deep passion for advocacy and strong skills in public speaking and representing diverse populations. I am looking forward to continuing this work during my time as an on-campus senator, as I aim to serve as a voice for on-campus students and the rest of the student population through the Senate. I am truly committed to creating a campus that reflects student needs.

I am ready to listen, act, and ensure that our campus is a place where your voices are heard, valued, and supported.
