Luke Lopez
Off Campus Senator

STATEMENT

Hi, I'm Luke Lopez, a third-year Applied Math major, running for off-campus Senator.
Through the last year on the Senate Outreach Committee, I’ve always ensured student concerns lead to immediate action through my steadfast and driven attitude. As secretary, I have helped organize large scale efforts to engage students on large issues. I helped start the Save Deltopia campaign, mobilizing thousands of students to attend town halls and community events. I ensured their voices were heard, by tabling often and distributing 3000 fliers around campus. Even while studying abroad in Sydney, I remained committed to Outreach despite logistical challenges and time differences. In Sydney, I saw what was missing in Isla Vista, with the absence of a long-term partnership with internships between IVCSD and AS. I saw how in Sydney, students had a direct voice in housing projects, local policies, and community events, also with reliable access to internships and leadership opportunities. I want to emulate this relationship here in Isla Vista. My plan as off-campus senator is to survey students to understand their priorities and concerns, advocate for more student and Senate involvement in IVCSD events, as well as building an official partnership between AS and IVCSD and other local agencies to ensure students get real representation within Isla Vista. I want students to know that they are getting more than representation, ensuring they have lasting influence over the community we live in. Vote Luke Lopez for direct advocacy, practical experience, and a strong student voice in Isla Vista.
