STATEMENT

Hey Gauchos!

My name is Cole Nadershahi, I am a third-year bio major, and I am running to be your next L&S senator because I love this school.

But just because we love this place doesn’t mean it can’t be better. In fact, that's precisely why it should be better. Did you know, for instance, that DLG used to serve food from 9 pm - 12 am? Or that other universities allow dining swipes to be used with local vendors? Or that the library used to be open 24 hours all quarter? I’ve spent many late hours hungry in the lib, shuffling from floor to floor as they shut down, trying desperately to stay focused for exams. I’ve often wished these things were different.

And there's no reason why they can’t be. Status quo isn’t an excuse.

The AS Senate has real power to enact change, to build a university experience that works better for us all. Their efforts are the only reason why library study hours have improved so far, and the only reason why we are finally getting that bike path by the ILP. That’s why I decided to run for AS Senate. To fight for real, tangible changes that we all want to see.

But these changes are made with your student fees; they pay for a lot of great things. But we also have some of the highest fees in the UC system, and some funds are wastefully spent. I think you should know what you pay for.

That's why I am also running to push for more expenditure transparency, so you can hold your government accountable for your money. Unnecessary spending can’t slip through the cracks.

I’ve done this type of work before, too. I’ve worked on a county commission, a UCSB hall council, and multiple club leadership boards where I’ve created programs and managed budgets.

Ultimately, I pledge to be your voice in student government. This is your university, your community. If elected, I will tirelessly seek your input in shaping the policy I propose. Together, we can fight for a UCSB that works as hard as you.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
