STATEMENT

Hi everyone! My name is Alec GeoSimonian, and I am a first-year physics major running for reelection to the Associated Students Senate. I was appointed and sworn in to my then-vacant seat in January, only a couple of months ago. My platform includes:

AS INVOLVEMENT IN IV: These past few months have shown us all that having the county board of supervisors govern IV without our own consent is no longer viable. If reelected, I will continue to do everything in my power as a Senator to support IV cityhood, while using the millions of rollover dollars that AS has to construct student enterprises like restaurants in IV so that we can develop a greater stake in the community so many of us call home.

INCREASED BUREAUCRATIC ACCOUNTABILITY: It is embarrassing that AS requisitions can take months to process. As a Senator this year, I introduced a bill accruing interest, paid by AS, on any particularly late requisitions. I will continue fighting for policies like this so that our student body feels confident in the institutions representing it.

BCU REFORM: BCUs play an integral role in our campus life, but internal policies have allowed many of them to fall dormant while still collecting millions of dollars of student fees. I will continue to fight to reform these important parts of our campus so they can best serve the student body.

British author GK Chesterton famously said that to truly better the world, one must both hate it enough to want to change it, and love it enough to deem it worth fixing. Perhaps this philosophy applies to AS as well. From student fees falling into apparent black holes to an unresponsive bureaucracy, there is a lot to hate. But there's also a lot of potential to make this an organization that is truly capable of standing up for the student body, and I want to keep fighting for that better future.

It'd be an honor to represent you for another term! Please reach out to me at alecgeosimonian@ucsb.edu or (818) 669-3004 if you have any questions.
