STATEMENT
Hi Gauchos! My name is Romi Riss. I’m a first-year History of Public Policy and Law student and I’m excited to be running to be your next Off-Campus Senator! My experience at UCSB so far– shaped by meeting fascinating people in clubs and getting involved in the greater Santa Barbara community by working at the courthouse– has inspired me to contribute to my new home.
As a low-income student, I know every dollar counts. When I first saw student fees in my BARC, I was annoyed and confused—where was my money actually going? Many students struggle to access AS programs that are already offered, and my goal is to make them more visible and efficient.
I’ll push to expand the most impactful programs and make resources more accessible. Navigating UCSB is already difficult, I want to ensure that your fees are going directly into making your life easier and your experience better. I’ll work to make sure your money is well spent.
I will prioritize expanding basic needs initiatives– with 48% of UCSB students facing food insecurity, we need to do better. Also, I’ll advocate for housing reform, reduced over-enrollment and stronger mental health resources while working to build a more collaborative and connected student community.
As your Off-Campus Senator, I will amplify your voice. Student voices and opinions should be a priority in decision-making. I will make sure your concerns are heard– and acted upon. My experience as Editor-in-Chief of the student paper, High Tide, taught me to connect with students and effectively communicate and understand their perspectives. I will fight to make AS more transparent, responsive, and accountable to those it serves.
I’m ready to take on the challenges that matter most– fighting for every student’s needs and ensuring UCSB puts students first. Thank you for your support!
A vote for me is a vote for:
Greater transparency and student empowerment
Housing reform and access to nutritious food
Expansion of basic needs and mental health resources
