STATEMENT
UCSB prides itself on being a place where academic excellence meets social engagement, fostering creativity and discovery. As an international student, I’ve seen this firsthand—but I also know there’s more we can do to ensure that all students truly feel supported and empowered.
That’s why I’m running for International Senator: to bridge the gap and GET RESULTS.
My name is Qhawe Manala. I am a South African mechanical engineering student and a men's soccer player. I have lived in rural villages, bustling cities, and now on the shores of Santa Barbara. This range of experiences made me understand people's diverse challenges—particularly financial hardship, cultural adaptation, and the struggle to find a sense of belonging. This further allowed me to understand the binding commonality that calls us to contribute towards a greater good for all. As a student-athlete who has organised charity campaigns that have given over 5000 underprivileged students access to enriching educational resources, I have learned how to lead, advocate, and turn ideas into action.
As your International Senator, I will focus on:
√GETTING REPRESENTED – International students contribute to UCSB’s vibrant culture, yet our voices often go unheard. I will work to strengthen our representation in AS and ensure that policies reflect our needs and concerns.
√GETTING SUPPORTED – From financial barriers to academic resources, international students face unique challenges. Beyond that, all students are confronted by a lack of housing options, expensive textbooks, and inequitable food plans. I will advocate for food security, housing, inclusive funding, and access to textbooks.
√GETTING CONNECTED – Moving abroad can be isolating, but it doesn’t have to be. I will push for inclusive events and professional networking opportunities to help international students build strong communities.
Every student at UCSB deserves to feel valued and heard.
Bridge the gap! Vote for Qhawe Manala!
