STATEMENT
Hi Gauchos! My name is Melanie Jones and I’m a third-year Political Science student, running to be your Letters & Science Collegiate Senator!
As a Mexican and Native American first-generation student and a passionate advocate for social justice and equity, I’m committed to uplifting every student in our diverse community, ensuring all voices are heard. I want to represent those who have ever felt silenced, marginalized, or dismissed. My work is rooted in addressing urgent issues like racial justice, food and housing insecurity, homelessness, and sexual and reproductive health—areas essential to our collective wellbeing.
My goal as your L&S Senator is to advocate for greater equity and support across campus by ensuring our resources genuinely reflect the diverse needs of our community. I’m especially dedicated to protecting our most vulnerable and historically marginalized groups, creating opportunities that foster greater student involvement in shaping our university.
My current involvement in Associated Students as the QTPOC Community Liaison on the Human Rights Board has provided me with profound insight on the challenges faced by marginalized students. Furthermore, my work on the Senate Outreach Committee has equipped me to craft effective legislation addressing adversities faced by our peers. This role has emphasized the importance of responding quickly and compassionately to alleviate student struggles in times of crisis—such as the devastating fires in Los Angeles early this year. Such experiences have sharpened my ability to identify pressing student needs and develop practical solutions within AS.
Associated Students functions best when it actively listens and responds to the diverse needs of the student body—I will be a steadfast advocate for your concerns, working diligently to build a more equitable, supportive campus where all students can flourish.
I am eager to serve you and collaborate in building a more cohesive and thriving campus for all students.
