STATEMENT
Fellow Gauchos,
My name is EJ Raad and I’m running to be your next External Vice President of Local Affairs. I believe that Isla Vista should work for UCSB students–not against us. I’m a second-year Political Science student and I’ve spent my time here fighting to make our community better. Now, I’m ready to take that fight to the next level.
During my time in the AS Attorney General’s Office, I’ve seen the issues that our community is facing. Our office has conducted extensive research into police violation cases and student arrest demographics. This work will allow me to effectively negotiate with IVFP and UCPD to ensure that local law enforcement reflects the needs of our community–not unfair policies that try to destroy IV’s social life.
As Internal Liaison of the AS Committee on Committees, I have firsthand experience in student government and how our fees are spent. Too often, our money is wasted or left unused. As EVPLA, I will fight to ensure our fees are used to give students benefits that justify the thousands we spend in AS fees.
Here’s how I’ll put students first:
SOLVE the Housing Crisis: I’ll create a UCSB-backed lease pre-qualifier that approves students for rentals before they even apply. This will incentivize leasing companies to choose UCSB students FIRST.
END Over-Policing: Police citations rise every year, and policies like the Party Ordinance (banned paid entry parties) and Rental Inspection Program (fines students who live in garages) unfairly target students. I’ll lead the charge in defending our rights by fighting to change these policies and expanding UCIV.
INVEST the $10M AS Rollover: We are the most well-funded student government in the nation, and yet $10M of our budget goes unused every year. This $10M comes from YOUR student fees. I will fight to reinvest it into campus improvements and student organizations.
It’s time for leadership that actually fights for YOU. We deserve a say in how IV is run.
Vote EJ Raad for EVPLA!
