STATEMENT

Hello everyone. My name is Anthony Alonzo (He/Him). I am a second-year History of Public Policy and Law student looking to be elected as one of the College of Letters and Science’s undergraduate senators. I am a first-generation Mexican student from a military family. I believe that anyone can succeed with the right support network in place, and my mission is to extend that chance and system to every student, present and future.

Two commitments I hold dear and have learned from are my involvement in our Liaison Committee and Santa Barbara’s Neighborhood Restorative Justice Program.

My experience in both has reaffirmed my commitment to unity and representation. In my committee, I have seen the strength that comes from building and maintaining the bonds between students. Through my volunteer work, I have experienced how it feels to be part of a community unified under the premise of a restorative approach to justice. Although both are very different in what is asked, I see the strength of people working together. This involvement has shown me the importance of not only listening to people but also understanding them.

The College of Letters and Science is the home of our most diverse students. Respect and collaboration are key to understanding one another because so many of us are different. I want to serve as a representative who leads in creating this space, starting with A.S. Although my involvement has diminished this notion, I still see A.S. as a mystery to most and want to eliminate that sentiment. I want all students to feel they have a place here.

If elected, I want to bring that to A.S., as it must be a place for all students to be heard and respected. I feel the answer is to bring together as many students as possible to work collaboratively in hopes of a better future for us all. We are all Gauchos, and to bring us closer together, we need more of us working with one another.

I appreciate your consideration!
