STATEMENT

Hello, my name is Alexander Aviña. I am a current second-year hoping to major in Sociology with a minor in Educational Studies.

As a candidate for the upcoming year as a University-Owned Off-Campus Senator, I want to bridge the gap between off-campus students and the Associated Student’s Senate. I’m interested in Education Policy, so I want the student body to be aware of senate discussions regarding housing, off/on-campus events and bills/resolutions.

As a soon-to-be off-campus student, issues that affect other off-campus students, also affect me – and having the opportunity to voice these conversations to the Senate meetings will allow me to represent my community and concerns. This lets me be able to bring a perspective from those who aren’t always on-campus.

I have previous experience in working in committees as the Residential Housing Association (RHA) Financial Vice-President, in which similar to senate, I was able to bring a perspective in regards to the housing community through our meetings and events.

I also participate in the Student Affairs Student Cabinet meetings as a student member – which allows me to bring into discussions my ideas and experiences regarding student affairs with other members and Student Affairs officials.

I am in UCSB Lobby Corps as well, representing as one of the Co-Communication Directors. This allows me to contribute to the student body by promoting upcoming events regarding state and federal legislation, bridging the opportunities for students to learn about and participate in state/federal lobbying.

These are some of the major components of my ability to promote and encourage students to voice needs/interests to the Senate. I want students to know that their voice is crucial to our undergraduate student body decisions.

I hope you will consider my prior experience and knowledge regarding concerns/interests made by the student body for the University Owned Off-Campus Senator position.

Thank you.

Best,
Alexander Aviña
