STATEMENT

Hello, my name is Justin Gallaway, and I am running for the position of off campus senator in the associated student government for the 2023-2024 school year. I am a first-year student studying political science at UCSB. In addition to political science, I am also passionate about American history and film. I believe my passion for these subjects, as well as my passion for making a difference in my community would make me a great candidate for AS senate.

As an off campus senator, I would be able to make a positive difference in the community, and as a student at UCSB, one of the most important concerns to address is the financial burdens which many students have. Living in Isla Vista is expensive, not to mention the cost of tuition, and there are many small changes which could be made to help alleviate this burden. One change which I believe would help to alleviate some financial cost is a reform of UCSB’s parking policies. Commuting students pay about 8 dollars a day for parking, and late fines start at 48 dollars and only go up. The cheapest option for commuters is 120 dollars a quarter. We also do not have free parking on the weekend, something present at many other colleges. Dining hall reform is also a policy shift that I believe would help students financially. Currently, off campus students have five different options for dining hall meal plans, starting with 5 as the lowest and ending with 17 as the highest. If policies such as meal swipes carrying over and the ability to use meal swipes for guests were introduced, the dining halls would appeal more to off campus students and would help to create a financially beneficial alternative for off campus students who have to figure out food arrangements.

By serving as your Off-Campus Senator, I hope to make a positive impact on our community and gain the skills and knowledge necessary to continue serving others in the future.
