STATEMENT
UCSB boasts on its website that our university is a place where academic excellence and social engagement unite to spark creativity and discovery. I’ve seen this for myself over my two quarters at UCSB – but not in AS. I know we can do better, and I’m running for Senate to GET RESULTS.
My name is Evan Sussman and I am a first-year student at UCSB, studying political science and history. I’m a bit of a student government nerd - as I’ve been a leader in student government since elementary school. And I’ve experienced how AS can amplify student voices and needs.
I spent this year in a fellowship, learning the intricacies of our AS and, at the same time, seeing inefficiencies firsthand. As someone who knows student government, I’ll make sure your dollars and voices aren’t wasted.
Working with like-minded candidates, my campaign is focused on: Getting ORGANIZED, getting HOUSED, and getting OUR MONEY’S WORTH
GET ORGANIZED: It’s clear that Associated Students can (and should) be more representative of students' wants and needs. With a disconnect between AS and the student body, a more functional, effective, and communicative student government would help us all.
GET HOUSED: While all first-years are guaranteed housing, a majority of our students are put into stressful housing situations following their 1st year. This is due to the lack of university housing, forcing students to pay extremely high rent rates in Isla Vista. I will hold the university accountable, ensuring they follow through on their commitment to address the housing crisis.
GET OUR MONEY’S WORTH: As a student worker and someone who is attentive to the tuition and fees of UCSB, I often ask; are we getting what we pay for? We pay for an AS budget of $16 MILLION a year, and I’m not convinced we’re getting the best product. I will use our money in a more fiscally responsible way to provide a meaningful and purposeful experience at UCSB.
Every vote matters, and I hope that I can earn yours. Sussman Gets Results!
